About the UMC

“The mission of the United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” – Adopted by the General Conference of the United Methodist Church, 2008

The United Methodist Church was formed in 1968 through the unification of the Evangelical United Brethren and Methodist denominations April 23 through May 6, 1968.

Following this Uniting Conference, the many annual conferences of the two denominations began the process of unification on a local level. Kansas West United Methodist Conference was one of the first to do so on July 30, 1968, at First United Methodist Church in Wichita. Bishops W. McFerrin Stowe and Paul W. Milhouse presided over the uniting conference.

The insignia of The United Methodist Church is a cross linked with a dual flame. This symbol relates the church to God by way of the second and third persons of the Trinity; the Christ (cross) and the Holy Spirit (flame).

‘Four Areas of Focus’ video

An exciting vision of United Methodist ministry and mission for the 21st century is unfolding.

“Four Areas of Focus,” a nine-minute video, features:
1. Developing principled Christian leaders for the church and the world
2. Creating new places for new people and renewing existing congregations
3. Engaging in ministry with the poor
4. Stamping out the killer diseases of poverty by improving health globally

Affirmed by the 2008 General Conference, the Four Areas of Focus offer a clear path for United Methodists to fulfill their mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
