Missionary to Mongolia visiting Kansas

Written: 9/29/2009

WICHITA—Helen Sheperd, a General Board of Global Ministries missionary in Mongolia, will visit several churches in Kansas from October 18 through 25.

Sheperd comes from Missouri and serves in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Since arriving in Mongolia in 2002, Sheperd’s mission goals have changed frequently. Originally slated to establish a Global Ministries presence in the country and to start the hospice movement, Sheperd has faced many challenges.

Obtaining a property for the first mission center was a major task. Now, as a nurse, she directs the Grace Hospice home-care program. Plans to expand the hospice program have been placed on hold for financial as well as leadership and faith development reasons. Her primary focus is on improving the quality of care and the depth of faith of the staff working in the hospice. Leadership development also is a main concern to ensure the future of the program.

“Serving in Mongolia continues to be an exciting, challenging assignment,” Sheperd is quoted on the GBGM Web site as saying.

In addition to her work with hospice, Sheperd coordinates the Global Ministries activities in Mongolia, which means working closely with other missionaries and the area financial executive to support the activities of two mission centers, three worshipping congregations and numerous projects.

Before moving to Mongolia, Sheperd was assigned to Seoul, Korea, as director of Severance Hospice, a project of Yonsei University, College of Nursing. Before her commissioning as a missionary, Sheperd worked in hospice home care, psychiatric nursing and at a children’s home.

In the Kansas West Conference, Sheperd will speak Oct. 22 at Countryside United Methodist Church near Wakefield. Check with the church for additional information.
