When members of the Satanta United Methodist Church’s 21st Time adult Sunday-school class realized that many children at the elementary school in their community lacked a warm coat, they knew something had to be done.

Their idea was simple: They would seek $20 donations for coats and thank those who donated by giving them complimentary cupcakes—either a half or full dozen—in return for their generosity.

Using a combination of order forms, word of mouth sales and social networking, the class received many donations in about two weeks.

Using the local bakery of class member Leanne Howie, a team of bakers from the 21st Time class—supported by members of the Satanta High School National Honor Society and their sponsor, Jennifer Hanson—planned to bake 60 dozen cupcakes.

At the end of the eight-hour baking session, the actual number of cupcakes baked topped 1,000.

The majority of cupcakes were picked up at church the following morning with many additional “sales” made. Members of the honor society made deliveries to others in town, and 21st Time class members took cupcakes to people in Sublette and Copeland.

The project netted more than $1,500, which was used to purchase 61 coats for 22 families who had requested them via a form that was distributed at Satanta Elementary School.

The coats were blessed during the Sunday service Nov. 20 and were delivered to the families who had requested them.
