New conference treasurer named

Janice Japp wrote on 3/27/2010 2:06:28 PM

Congratulations to my good friend, Jane! I became acquainted with Jane during our seminary studies at Perkins. As a fellow CPA-turned-ordained minister, I can attest to the breadth of interest and experience which Jane brings to her vocation. Her education, gifts and graces should prove to be a good match for the needs of your Kansas West Conference. I only wish we could have found a suitable home for her, right here in my Nebraska Conference.

Ross to be featured speaker at 2010 session

The response from Chris Eden is much appreciated and has served the purpose of causing my thinking over that exactly I said! There was no intention of casting reflection on the person as there is absolutely (the new buzz word I hear all the time rather than exactly) no criteria for my doing so. Yes, his skills and understanding will serve our conference well as well as the general church. My remark initially was only to reflect on a common practise of management. God bless our conference!

Quinter UMC helps during bus crisis

Thanks for "Opening your Door " to those in need. What a fantastic story. As one who has been on many chartered bus trip (including the METour) such kindness would have been an awesome witness to pure servitude. Thank you so much for showing such a loving concern. Makes me proud to be a Methodist.

Having a somewhat related background (marketing/sales and sourcing sales training) as Wayne, I dig the sentiment. JC's thought resonates as well. The best salespeople didn't always (ever?) translate into comparably successful sales managers. But Rev. Ross's history seems less focused on growth of a local church and more on supporting connectional growth of church(es). Beginning as a supporter/director on GBOD (evangel/small group), then pastoral (10% annual worship growth, 20% annual study growth), then supporter/director in a somewhat different capacity. Seems like he brings a passion for evangelism to the call to help others to that end...on both agency and local levels. Will be good to hear from him. Maybe he is more like an empowering sales manager than a salesperson, perhaps without all the weekly call report meetings and quota pressures. :)

Bishop Jones issues statement regarding UMC's role in health care reform

Gary Bishop wrote on 3/22/2010 7:11:01 PM

I have been wondering where the Christians are for quite a while. Are people worried that cost of health care will come out of there pocket. Don't we give to God for just that reason. Health Care for all has been in the works for many years. Let's start loving others with our actions not just our words.

JC - A significant period of my life was contracting with companies for sales seminars. The common mistake was the believing they could take their top producing salespersons and place them as sales managers - all to no avail. Any correspondence here with what you say?

I am thrilled at Vance will be speaking about intentional faith sharing. That is something we all need help with. But when I read what he accomplished in the local church I can't help but ask myself, wouldn't he have a greater impact in a local church again? It seems to me that sometimes we take our most gifted people away from where they are most needed.

Episcopal Area Transition Team seeks to ask the right questions

Mary Al Titus wrote on 3/12/2010 5:41:33 PM

This sounds really fine so far. I'm wondering if it wouldn't make sense for two conference centers/bishop's office locations to be kept for at least the short run. This is going to be a big geographic area for one person to cover. Seems to me it would be helpful for that one Bishop to have an office at (sort of) one end of the Episcopal Area & the other end (or side) as well. If our bishop is to lead us into more fruitful discipleship, she/he surely needs to be provided as much support & care as possible. Just a thought. Blessings to all on this trasition team - you've got a huge responsibility. May God be with you throughout your journey.

Seminar speaker encourages analysis for deeper preaching

Susanna Southard wrote on 1/31/2010 3:37:26 PM

Thanks for the article. I'd like to clarify a couple of things. One is that I am not technically a 'Dr.' yet because the dissertation must still be defended. The second is that "The Jewish Study Bible" is actually a Tanakh. It's the edition I recommend because of the study notes that give concise information about rabbinic traditions around the biblical texts. I enjoyed my experience with the KS Area Seminar and I hope the pastors who attended found my contribution helpful.

This is a real awesome day for this church to reach out to so many people. We all can take notes and learn there are more and more ways to bring Christ to people and let them see first hand how "brothers and sisters" from just one church can make a difference. God Bless you all,

I am so glad you are making this trip. At Southwestern College we have 6 very active United Methodist students from Zimbabwe. They are all very connected with the persons you will meet on your trip. Also, David Dolson is at the college, he has been on the Africa University board for years and goes every summer or so the work with there commputer and buisness departments. Before and after your trip, you might enjoy meeting these great folks.

I've ever witnessed them minister but truly they heal wounded souls with their music. they are the chosen generation. Think about the young children by supporting this group.

Required of pastors? Why not Finance and Stewardship officers of the church. Fortunately, I have never served a church with financial deficits. When a proper program is not in place, I suggest they think of what they are missing. Our Christmas Love Gift this year went to missions in total! Response? You betcha' (forgive me, please). So should I be unhappy when our minister stands up and reads every sermon word for word off of his paper? The only time I have ever seen him really do without the papers, was when the DS was there. Ha
